INFORMATION
Gabriel Janer Manila, the novelist who shook the Balearic literature during the seventies and eighties, returns to the first line with a rich and powerful literary memoirs book. Through the life and work of his family, stallholders who used to sell clothes at Majorcan fairs, draws a portrait of life in the island. The author recalls various stages in his life: his childhood in the village of Algaida, in contact with nature, with the weight of the war still very present, in a close-knit environment. His depiction of the Catholic education of the time draws an environment that today appears picturesque and shocking. During that time, Janer Manila grows a passion for the popular culture of the island: a certain folk imagery, witchcraft, folk legends, erotic songs. He is able to resist the pressure to become a priest and discovers the joy of learning and teaching, as well as the cultural activism of certain cliques. And despite Franco’s shadow, the beginning of the sixties brings, like a wind, the songs of the Beatles, sexual freedom and revolt.
