Joan Veny i Clar

 Joan Veny i Clar is a prestigious linguist.

He is Emeritus Professor of Catalan Philology at the University of Barcelona. He received his doctorate in Romance Philology in 1956. His knowledge of dialectology led him to publish Els parlars catalans in 1978, the year in which he entered the Philological section of the Institut d'Estudis Catalans. He was director of the language section of the Institut d'Estudis Andorrans. He was president of the International Association of Catalan Language and Literature (1994-2000) and of the Supervisory Council of TERMCAT (1990-2015). In 2013, he was appointed honorary member of the Society of Roman Linguistics.

In 1997, he received the Josep Maria Llompart Prize from the Obra Cultural Balear. He holds honorary doctorates from the University of Valencia (2008) and the University of the Balearic Islands (2016). He has been awarded the Creu de Sant Jordi de la Generalitat de Catalunya (1997), the Premi de la Fundació Institució Catalana de Suport a la Recerca (2004), the Medalla de Honor de la Xarxa Vives d'Universitats (2013) and the Premi d'Honor de les Lletres Catalanes (2015). In 2016, he received an honorary doctorate from the University of the Balearic Islands. One year later, he was awarded the Gold Medal of the Autonomous Community of the Balearic Islands (2017).
