Aires formenterencs

  • (Formentera)

Aires Formenterencs starts as a band in Formentera in March 1989 and nowadays its members are: Joan Bartomeu Escandell "Xumeu" (vocals, acoustic guitar, flute and drum), Francesc Serra Ferrer "Xico" (voice and Spanish guitar), and Santiago Escandell Mari "Santi" (voice, lute and castanets).

Their music is distinctly Mediterranean and it stems from the instrumental, musical and literary tradition of the islands. Nature is the inspiring element of their repertoire: sea, salt, earth, people, etc. They have forged a personal sound from traditional instruments like castanets, drum, flute and sword, merged with other, more modern, instruments. In 1990 Aires Formenterencs recorded in Palma "Visc a Formentera", a song that eventually became an anthem. The band has published several LPs, “Mots i acords per penyora” ,”Rosa, mar i falcia”, “Pàgines enrere”, “Illa Endavant”, “Ombres de llum”, “Aniversaires”, recorded at Ona studios in Bunyola and produced and arranged by Miquel Brunet. They were elected "Centennial anniversary important figures" by Diario de Ibiza in the field of popular culture. The Institute of Ibizan Studies awarded them with the Mention of Honor Sant Jordi in 1994.

The Balearic Government awarded Aires Formenterers with the Ramon Llull Prize in 2013.
